New Article: Coopetition in the Pharma Industry: Challenges for Antitrust

Our director Juan Delgado has co-authored the article Coopetition in the Pharma Industry: Challenges for Antitrust, in collaboration with Professor Lourdes Sosa (London School of Economics). The article is published in the November 2024 issue of Antitrust Chronicle (Competition Policy International, CPI). The article illustrates how coopetition strategies work in the pharmaceutical sector and analyses the challenges of coopetition strategies for antitrust.

 

Coopetition — collaboration between competitors — is a powerful driver of innovation in the pharmaceutical industry. Pharmaceutical companies successfully share resources, R&D and skills to develop new drugs and explore new market opportunities. Coopetition can transform competition and innovation dynamics, benefitting both the industry and consumers. Thus, its positive effects extend beyond the initial scope of cooperation. Antitrust regulators should ensure that the benefits of coopetition are fully realized by focusing their interventions on promoting both competition and innovation.
